Climb the ladder into your base, handful of Z's wander past, knocking your ladder over, and now you're stuck on the roof without a rope. #4.Good short guide, if you want you could add second-to-first floor ropes to it. If you break your staircase you can install a wooden wall frame in its place, turn it into a window, and add a sheet rope to it. Now you are completely safe on the second floor even if zombies break into your first floor. Requires at least 2 carpentry and a sledgehammer.

In an emergency when all sheet ropes are gone, if you have carpentry, you could always leave materials to build stairs. Then smash it down once your up in your base.
