Within two years I only had it serviced for normal wear and tear, oil changes, fuel filter, transmission fluid, etc. With only 93k miles on the Jetta, I had to replace the throttle body, water pump, wiper motor, thermostats, a/c compressor, fuel pump line, spark plugs, pcv valve, fans, etc. Within 1 1/2 years I spend 6+ grand on repairs.The 2.0 is ungodly slow, unbearable at times. But, the 2.0 is THE most bullet proof, reliable, time tested engine Volkswagen makes (and in my opinion any engine ever.) It's literally the same block and head, and even the same intake design (different material) that has been used on ever 8 valve NA engine since the 2nd generation. ….

The 1.4 is crazy reliable. It's a very old and tested design. It makes about 147 HP and 180-ish torque. It makes this very very low down. With peak torque being at about 1400 rpm. It's surprisingly quick, and few mods would get it quicker. Like wheel hop is an issue for an example. I would stay away from the 8 speed.We’ve got a sporty-side.
