In general, we were pleasantly surprised that the crowds were not so bad. It was reported in the local news that arrivals to Hawaii were about 90% of pre-COVID levels. On the Big Island, we were able to do everything that we wanted, without crazy wait times.. Moana Lani Resort – I highly recommend this resort.
To me Kona is only worth maybe 3 days and Waikoloa better beaches up there if looking for quality beach time. If planning on looping the Island and seeing Hamakua Coast, Hilo, and Volcano sites its best to put 2 nights on that side of the island right in the middle of your trip.Your best hiking will be in Volcano National Park and def. If your only destination is the Big Island, flying from Orlando with an connection in California will be the ticket (pun intended, lol). ~ ColleenSo, in addition to time in Volcano and the Kona coast, we plan to drive the island. One segment would be from the Kona airport area, up 19 and onto 270 to Hawi, back down 250 and back onto 19 and down to Volcano (avoiding the Saddle road ). The second segment would be from Volcano along 11 on the south side of the island and back to the Kona area.

We are on the Big Island Feb 10 till Mar 13. We have been finding some great snorkeling on both sides, lots of hard coral formations and plenty of fish. We have been to many top snorkeling destinations in the caribbean and Hawaii ranks up there with some of the best. I'd expect you could find an oceanfront 2-BR condo in the Kailua -Keauhou area within your budget. But it will likely be on a rugged, rocky shoreline, and not have A/C and no good beach nearby. Unless you plan to stay on Maui, just do your watching from Big Island. (The Kohala area of Big Island has nicer resorts than Kona, some of them on beaches.) Forest & Trails would be good but choose a tour that's off grid where you can't go otherwise. Most places like Volcano National Park are easily self guided with a map & a bit of preplanning.
